VWM Livestream – Disaster at Cistern: The End of the Ranger Force in Italy

In the early hours of January 30, 1944, the 1st and 3rd Ranger Battalions under Colonel William Darby launched the initial phase of a breakout from the Anzio beachhead in Italy. The objective was to capture the town of Cisterna, but they walked into a trap.

Surrounded and out of ammunition, the two Ranger Battalions surrendered and were taken captive as prisoners of war. Join Virginia War Memorial Education Intern and former Army Ranger Will Heatley as he discusses the end of Colonel Darby's Ranger Force during the Italian campaign of World War II.
