Boards & Foundations

The Virginia Department of Veterans Services (DVS) receives vital feedback and assistance regarding programs and services from these boards and foundations:

BVS is an executive board of the Commonwealth of Virginia tasked with advising the Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs and DVS Commissioner on matters pertaining to Virginia military veterans and their family members. BVS membership consists of 26 persons: 15 citizen members appointed by the Governor, and 7 members of the Virginia General Assembly. There are also four non-voting ex-officio members.

The JLC is an advisory group with the mission to provide advice and assistance to the Governor, Virginia General Assembly and DVS regarding matters concerning Virginia’s veteran community. Membership is comprised of one representative and an alternate from qualifying veteran services organizations (VSOs) throughout the Commonwealth. Members are chosen by their respective organizations and appointed and confirmed by the Governor.

VVSF is an independent agency of the Commonwealth that supports the interests of Virginia veterans and their families under the auspices of the office of the Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs. VVSF provides supplemental funding for DVS programs and services when state and federal resources are unavailable. VVSF is governed and administered by an appointed sixteen-member Board of Trustees. 

VWMF is the nonprofit organization that financially supports the education and patriotic programs, exhibits, films, educational outreach and capital projects of the Virginia War Memorial which is a division of DVS. Members of its Board of Directors are chosen and appointed by the President of the Foundation and fellow Directors.
