Connecting with Other Service Members and Veterans
Peer Services
The VVFS Veteran Peer Specialists (VPS) are veterans representing diverse backgrounds, military, post-military and transition experiences. VPS assist service members and veterans in identifying their own personal goals for wellness and growth, helps them overcome barriers to personal objectives and both encourages and accompanies the military member and their family throughout the process. VPS are trained to provide not only mental health support to the military community, but to also identify resources that may assist the service member in reaching their stated goals.
- VPS are veterans that have overcome their own personal struggles to include post traumatic stress, brain injury, military sexual trauma, suicidal ideation, substance abuse and/or depression.
- Non-hierarchical, non-judgmental, and confidential relationship with service member.
- VPS work within a community setting and are not linked to behavioral health facilities.
- Direct linkage to medical and behavioral health treatment services and other resources as needed by service member, veteran, and their families.
- Allows service member to move forward at their own pace.
Peer Groups
VVFS Peer Support offers peer groups to military service members (including National Guard and Reservists) and veterans. These groups are conducted virtually and in-person. Groups are non-clinical and afford military-connected individuals the opportunity to develop comradery, gain information and share their own experiences. Groups are facilitated by veterans from various branches of the service. In addition, VVFS Peer Services also facilitates outreach and skill building activities such as lunch and learn sessions, and online mental health wellness groups and resources.
For additional information on VVFS peer services, please contact the Peer Services Director at (540) 840-3003 or view the video below on VVFS Peer Support Services.
