Public Invited to Attend and Participate to Honor Veterans

The Horton Wreath Society will place a live evergreen wreath on each marker at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery on Saturday, December 14, 2019.  The cemetery is located at 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, Virginia 23434.

The Horton Wreath Society (HWS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises funds to place wreaths at the cemetery as part of an annual ceremony.  Last year, more than 2,000 volunteers placed 9,000 wreaths.  This year, 9,500 wreaths will be placed.

The public is invited and encouraged to participate in this special event held to honor those who served our nation.

The wreath laying is a free event and will begin at 9 a.m. with the laying of 25 wreaths on the cemetery’s ceremonial row.  At approximately 9:45 a.m. family members with a loved one who is interred at the cemetery will place wreaths, followed at approximately 10 a.m. by wreath laying on all markers by volunteers.  Light refreshments will be available.

After the last wreath is laid, the HWS will hold a formal ceremony in the cemetery’s Committal Shelter to honor and recognize the sacrifices of military veterans.  The ceremony will feature guest speakers, patriotic music, the playing of “Taps,” and a bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace.”  The formal ceremony will conclude at approximately 1 p.m.

There will be no parking at or on the cemetery grounds.  Participants should visit the HWS webpage ( for information regarding parking and transportation options, start times, and special Red Flag Reservations for family members and loved ones planning to attend.

Additional information will be updated and disseminated as it is available via the HWS webpage, on Facebook, and through other social media outlets.
