On Friday, March 8th Virginia Veterans Corps (VVC) members participated in a training activity and celebrated AmeriCorps Week. The theme for this year’s AmeriCorps Week focused on “AmeriCorps Works.” The goal of the training aimed to provide members with additional tools they could use to help them better serve the community. Catherine Wilson, Executive Director for VVC , opened the training by thanking Navigators and encouraged them to continue to provide excellent service to veterans and their families. In addition, Ms. Wilson led the Navigators in reciting the AmeriCorps pledge.
Navigators then participated in a teambuilding exercise and enjoyed an interactive presentation given by Kathleen Thompson, a Work and Family Life Consultant, for Fleet and Family Support Center. Ms. Thompson gave a presentation on Stress Management; and discussed the various work styles that different personality types possess. In addition, Navigators learned techniques to alleviate the impact that stress has on the body.
Virginia Veterans Corps alum were invited back to enjoy lunch with current Navigators and afterwards participated in a discussion which focused on their experiences with the program. The former alums who attended discussed how they benefitted from their term of service and talked about the impact their AmeriCorps experience had on their careers and lives.
